Girls make media

Minnesota Nice blog post by Debbie Rasmussen, August 18, 2008 - 11:34am; tagged: girl media, girls, Girls Make Media, media creation, zines.

Passing on the news of a recently-launched website dedicated to honoring and mobilizing girls' media production called Girls Make Media. Creator Mary Celeste Kearney is hoping the site will become a resource for girls, as well as media educators, researchers, and others dedicated to amplifying the voices of girls.

Looks like it's off to a good start -- please check it out, spread the word, contribute...

Know about New Moon for girls?

Minnesota Nice blog post by Debbie Rasmussen, July 14, 2008 - 4:34pm; tagged: friends of Bitch, girls, magazines, media, new media.

Several months ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Nancy Gruver, founder of New Moon, a magazine aimed at girls ages 8 to 12. New Moon is great – they're ad free, have girl editors and writers. They have a girl blog. Oh, and they're also based in Minnesota.

Today in my inbox was a message from Nancy sharing the news that on September 1, they'll be launching New Moon Girls web community – like the magazine, it'll be ad free, girl-driven content. In the meantime, they're trying to raise money.

Help them out, won't you?  It's a rare thing to find media aimed at building up girls' self-esteem rather than tearing it down.

"Are you ready to rock 'n' roll?"

Love / Shove blog post by Debbie Rasmussen, March 8, 2008 - 9:56am; tagged: documentary, events, girls, movies, Portland, rock, women in rock.

If there's anything more awesome than seeing an eight-year old girl scream that into a microphone, it's being in a theater full of girls like this celebrating the opening of Girls Rock! The Movie.

Girls Rock! The movie

Girls Rock!

Minnesota Nice blog post by Debbie Rasmussen, March 7, 2008 - 2:38pm; tagged: girls, movies, music, rock, women in rock.

Tonight Girl's Rock! The Movie premieres in selected cities across the country. I'm going! You should, too, if it's playing where you live (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Berkeley, Seattle, Portland, New York, Chicago). If you're not familiar, Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls is a nonprofit that teaches girls ages 8-18 to learn how to rock DIY style and in the process, build their self-esteem and self-confidence. If you're someone who wishes the rock camp would've been around when you were a girl, check out Ladies Rock Camp, their annual fundraiser.
