Don't Drop the Birth Control Ball This Year

Sex and Sexuality post by Kjerstin Johnson, December 29, 2009 - 11:15pm; tagged birth control, emergency contraception, New Year's, reproductive health.
Oh the things that make up New Year's Eve: chintzy eye-glasses, countless top ten lists, nosiemakers...emergency contraception? According to the National Institute for Reproductive Health, sales for emergency contraception more than double in the first days after the New Year. The Back Up Your Birth Control Campaign has made a short vid reminding you that if things don't go as planned--as they often don't--you have options. And it's a cute vid (love you, Grandma!) that really works year-round.
So if you don't want a New Year's baby of your own, don't drop the ball! Plan ahead and tell your friends to too!

Open Thread: Health Care Reform and the Stupak Amendment

Science and Politics post by Kjerstin Johnson, November 9, 2009 - 6:25pm; tagged abortion, Health care, reproductive health, reproductive justice, women's health.

On Saturday night the House of Representatives narrowly passed a health-care reform bill, changing the way Americans will access health insurance. Included in the bill was an amendment from Bart Stupak (D-MI), which "prohibits federal funds for abortion services in the public option." Women seeking insurance coverage for abortions must seek a plan outside the enrolled companies. Sixty-Four Democrats voted to include the amendment.

While the bill is heralded as the biggest step in health care reform since the New Deal, the Stupak amendment serves as a monumental setback for reproductive justice.

Read on for thoughts from other bloggers, but please share your thoughts on the bill, the amendment, and the future of health care below.

Money Meets Maternity: Cash for your Eggs

Beaker Bitch post by Sarah Mirk, June 23, 2009 - 4:43am; tagged babymaking, bioethics, biology, Deborah Spar, egg donation, egg donors, IVF, maternity, money for eggs, New York, payment for eggs, reproductive health, reproductive justice, stem cell research, women's health.
Whenever you're feeling down about the grim economy, stop and consider for a moment that your ovaries are tiny goldmines. Over 5,000 American babies each year are born from eggs "donated" to in vitro fertilization clinics or couples -- but in reality, those eggs are rarely donated. Instead, as you've probably gleaned from the backpage ads of alt-weeklies, some families are willing to pay big money for egg donors. The average payment for a US egg donor, according to researcher Harvard researcher Deborah Spar, is $5,000.

But strangely, until now, it has been illegal to pay women who give eggs for research rather than reproduction. This month New York state okayed cutting checks to women who undergo (often difficult) weeks of hormone treatment to donate eggs for stem cell research.

The state expects a backlash and it's getting some from bioethics and religious groups. But the legal change raises the question of whether it's okay to pay women for their eggs at all - and if so, why have different rules for research eggs and babymaking eggs? 163_nb_fried_egg.jpg
