Ain't I a Mommy?

Bookstores Brim with Motherhood Memoirs. Why Are So Few of Them Penned by Women of Color?
Ain't I a Mommy?
Article by Deesha Philyaw, appeared in issue Genesis; published in 2008; filed under Books; tagged mommy wars, motherhood, parenting, publishing, race, women of color.

Shortly before the birth of my first child nine years ago, while browsing the bookstore for mommy wisdom, I discovered Anne Lamott’s Operating Instructions: A Journal of My Son’s First Year and fell in love with the author and the book. More than any parenting truisms the book might have contained, it was Lamott’s writing style—funny, self-deprecating, and brutally honest—that kept me reading. The big mommy insight I gleaned from Operating Instructions was that I wasn’t quite as neurotic as Anne, so my kid and I would probably be all right.

Factory Girl

Dora the Explorer and the Dirty Secrets of the Global Industrial Economy
Factory Girl
Article by Lois Leveen, Illustrated by James Hindle, appeared in issue Genesis; published in 2008; filed under Broadcast; tagged children, Dora, global economy, global trade, globalization, NAFTA, tv.

Dora the Explorer, eponymous Latina star of the animated Nickelodeon series, is a bilingual problem solver who confidently traverses unknown territory in every episode. In “City of Lost Toys,” a typical episode, Dora sets out to find her missing teddy bear, Osito, and other toys her friends have lost. She’s helped along the way by her sidekick (a monkey named Boots), her trusty map, and a group of magical stars she and Boots catch. The first landmark Dora reaches on her journey is a Mesoamerican-style pyramid where she must complete basic counting and arithmetic problems.

Mommy & Me

Looking for the Missing Voices in the Burgeoning World of Mom Blogs
Supplemental Content by Veronica I. Arreola, appeared as a sidebar in the article 'Ain't I a Mommy?' in issue Genesis; filed under: Internet culture; tagged: BlogHer, blogosphere, blogs, momblogs, mommy blogs, motherhood, parenting, race, women of color.

Mommy blogs are big business these days. A recent Washington Post profile on ur-mommy blogger Heather Armstrong (a.k.a. Dooce) suggested that her site could be raking in up to 40 grand a month. While most mothers who blog are nowhere near as influential (and their sites nowhere near as lucrative), they take pride and satisfaction in the work they do, and the websites they maintain offer valuable community, a sense of connection to other parents, and occasionally a little pocket change.

The Allied Media Conference, the Chevron shareholders' meeting, and a little bit of randomness

Delightfully Cranky blog post by Lisa Jervis, May 30, 2008 - 12:52pm; tagged conferences, fundraising, media, protest, tattoos.

So last week I tried to buy my plane tickets to the ever-awesome Allied Media Conference in Detroit, June 20-21. I was really looking forward to being in the presence of so many radical media folks, building coalitions, hearing about the work other people are doing, and just hangin' out. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a ticket under $600, so it's not going to happen for me this year. A lot of people are surely in the same situation, so I figured I'd spend some of what I budgeted for travel on helping other folks get there; if you can, please do the same (and consider donating to Bitch, too, to help with our very own Debbie Rasmussen's costs).

In other not-entirely-unrelated news (I can't say I'm unhappy about the high fuel prices driving up the cost of flying and driving and making people reconsider their destructive habits), on Wednesday morning Jen Angel (one of the founders of the late lamented Clamor and the aforementioned AMC) convinced me to go with her out to Chevron's corporate headquarters in San Ramon, California, to take part in a protest at their annual shareholders' meeting.

Judy Chicago!!!!!!!!!

B-sides blog post by Amy S. Williams, May 23, 2008 - 4:42pm; tagged art, events, feminism.

We are thrilled, estatic, honored, and pleased as heck, to announce that artist Judy Chicago, whole ideas and work have shaped the feminist art movement (see an interview with her in our Super Issue), has agreed to be our Honorary Chair for sm[art], our fall art auction. Damn, I have nothing else to say at this point, but that it is pretty sweet. And good news to kick off a 3 day weekend. Hope all of you each get something good like that coming your way.

Busting the "Technical Virgin" Myth

Love / Shove blog post by Miriam Wolf, May 21, 2008 - 12:07pm; tagged Guttmacher, sex, sexuality, STD, teen sex.
For months now, articles about our "hook-up culture" have touted the fact that teens have been engaging in oral and anal sex instead of vaginal sex so that they can still call themselves virgins. The trouble is, it turns out that so-called fact is actually a myth.
