A very 'comic' weekend

sm[art] blog post by Briar Levit, September 22, 2008 - 11:32am; tagged comics, Estrus, Mari Naomi, zines.

My cousin was in town this weekend—her first visit to Portland since childhood (we're from the Bay Area). It was a whirlwind visit, but we did hit the most important spots like Powell's Books and the legendary zine shop, Reading Frenzy. In addition to starting the graphic novel, The Watchmen (so far there are already some interesting plot points about the role of women in this particular super hero gang), I also picked up a few other comics, including the really enjoyable zine, Estrus Comics.

Girls make media

Bitch on Wheels blog post by Debbie Rasmussen, August 18, 2008 - 11:34am; tagged girl media, girls, Girls Make Media, media creation, zines.

Passing on the news of a recently-launched website dedicated to honoring and mobilizing girls' media production called Girls Make Media. Creator Mary Celeste Kearney is hoping the site will become a resource for girls, as well as media educators, researchers, and others dedicated to amplifying the voices of girls.

Looks like it's off to a good start -- please check it out, spread the word, contribute...

Time out for some zine love

Bitch on Wheels blog post by Debbie Rasmussen, April 20, 2008 - 6:59pm; tagged print publishing, queer, religion, short stories, zines.

A few good ones I've stumbled upon recently.

Bitte Liebling ("Please darling" in Deutsche). As the subtitle, Hot Queer Action, suggests, it's a porn zine, so if you're not into that kind of thing, move on to the next one. But for others, the latest issue (#4) includes a very special photo essay in which Bitch magazine is, uh, prominently featured. Curious? Contact Frau Carissa to fetch your copy.

Depressing News...

B-sides blog post by Amy S. Williams, February 26, 2008 - 1:16pm; tagged magazines, zines.

I awoke this morning to the news that the music magazine, No Depression, will cease publishing after its May/June issue. Citing many of the same reasons that other indie publications have closed their doors (check out the  story in Lost/Found issue of Bitch: Paper Cuts: Saying RIP to some of the best DIY), ND will move to web only content after 13 years of print publishing.
